ÖTILLÖ Whistler Preview

When Lars Finanger of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun USA invited me to Whistler to check out the tentative ÖTILLÖ Whistler race course, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. The chance to explore a new course in one of the most beautiful places on earth was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

Arrival and Reunions

Our adventure began in Vancouver, where Lars and I met up at the airport. It was great to see my friend again, and we celebrated our reunion with some delicious hot dogs from a stand right outside the airport. A simple pleasure, but a memorable start to our trip.

Before we left Vancouver, we enjoyed a traditional Swedish fika with some friends and acquaintances. During our time in the city, we also had the chance to meet with the team at Form to check out their innovative swim goggles. Their technology is truly impressive, and I look forward to diving deeper into that in a future post.

The Journey to Whistler

With our appetites satisfied and excitement building, we set off up the Sea to Sky Highway. The weather was on our side, providing us with clear skies and stunning views along the way. This scenic drive is one of the most beautiful in the world, and it set the tone for the incredible experience that lay ahead.

Exploring the Course

Over the next few days, Lars and I ran and swam the ÖTILLÖ Whistler course, making several adjustments to enhance the experience for racers. Our goal was to reduce the time spent on asphalt and increase the time on dirt trails, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in Whistler’s natural beauty.

The course is a diverse mix of gravel trails, pavement, and some of the most technical single-track you’ll find anywhere. Picture yourself navigating through lush evergreens, over rocks and roots, and across loamy dirt paths with majestic mountain views surrounding you. At times, you might even feel like an Ewok could step out from behind a tree!

Be prepared for a challenging course. The terrain is anything but flat, so bring your climbing legs. The technical climbs and descents will test your skills and endurance. With trail names like “A River Runs Through It,” “Mel’s Dilemma,” “Get Over It,” and “Mandatory Suicide,” you can expect an exhilarating race.

The swims are equally captivating. The glacier-fed lakes are brisk, to say the least, but their crystal-clear waters offer stunning views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The experience of swimming in these pristine lakes is truly unforgettable.

Whistler’s Offerings

Whistler has so much more to offer beyond the race course. The village is brimming with dining, shopping, and fika spots to explore. I highly recommend staying in or near Whistler Village in the days leading up to the race to soak in the local charm and familiarize yourself with the course. Additionally, we’ll be hosting an Envol Swimrun Clinic prior to the race, which is a great opportunity to refine your skills and meet fellow racers.

For a more detailed account of what Lars and I accomplished while we were “boots on the ground,” check out the Löw Tide Böyz podcast. You can listen to it on Apple or Spotify, or watch it below.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of the course and hope to see you in Whistler soon. This race is shaping up to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved!
