Compassionate Care for the Uninsured 5k

Today’s race was a lot of fun.  The weather was around 45 degress when we arrived at the start line.  I didn’t feel like I had enough time to warm up.  Plus, my last Gu shot was about 15 minutes later than it should have been.

Anyhow, as the race started, I began a little slower than I probably should.  The first quarter mile was an uphill, so I didn’t want to start too quickly, especially since I hadn’t properly warmed up.  After about the 1st mile, I settled into 4th place with a good pace.  Between mile 1 and 2, I overcame the two in front of me to settle into 2nd.  The 1st place gent, a 16 year old,  was a good tenth of a mile or more in front of me and seemed to have a decent pace going.  At mile 3, I was right behind him as he seemed to be losing steam.  Knowing that I could overtake him, I decided to slow my pace and conserve my energy just a bit.  This would prove to hurt my time and cause me to miss my goal finish time.

With a quarter-mile left, I picked up the pace and sprinted to the finish for 1st place.  I calculated that I was 1:54 slower than what I should have finished.  The two things that hurt was the slow start and conserving too much energy at the end.  However, I finished 1st!

You did start slow.  I was standing there with Alba saying, "Why is he starting so slow?  I know he typically runs much faster than that."  :)

You did great.  First place is always a great motivator.
